Gail Sorronda, known for her gothic-inspired designs blending elements of Nosferatu and Picnic at Hanging Rock, has been left dismayed after being excluded from the upcoming Australian Fashion Week. Despite receiving acclaim from industry icons like Karl Lagerfeld and Dolce & Gabbana, Sorronda’s distinctive style did not align with the vision of the event’s new organizers.
The rejection of Sorronda’s application to showcase her signature flowing white gowns, sharp black tunics, and striking coats at the Sydney-based fashion extravaganza came as a surprise to the designer. Expressing her shock and disappointment at the decision, Sorronda highlighted the significance of the event in shaping her career, having kickstarted it there in 2005.
The Australian Fashion Council, now overseeing the event following a transition from IMG, cited a shift towards a trade-focused approach as the reason for Sorronda’s exclusion. Emphasizing the need for participants geared towards local and international wholesale markets, the council indicated that Sorronda’s application did not align with this direction, a decision that left the designer taken aback given her extensive experience in global markets.
Kellie Hush, the newly appointed CEO of Australian Fashion Week, explained that the event’s restructuring aims to cater to businesses primed for wholesale opportunities, a criterion that Sorronda’s application did not fully meet. With the final lineup for the event yet to be determined, Hush underscored the challenges of revamping the event on a tight timeline, in contrast to the longer planning period afforded to the previous organizers.
Despite the setback, Sorronda found solace in securing a spot at the Melbourne Fashion Festival, where her latest collection will be showcased alongside other esteemed Australian designers. The festival’s CEO, Caroline Ralphsmith, praised Sorronda’s ability to blend creativity with timelessness, noting her enduring appeal and business acumen, qualities that have solidified her position in the Australian fashion landscape.
